The North Shore Choral Society concluded its season of “Great Expectations” on June 8 as we presented the Chicago area premiere of Gwyneth Walker’s The Great Lakes, a “musical journey across the five magnificent lakes bordering the eastern US and Canada,” with lyrics from texts by American and Canadian poets. NSCS and our audience enjoyed a pre-concert talk with Gwyneth Walker, moderated by WFMT’s Oliver Camacho.
Also joining NSCS on our musical journey across the lakes was Loyola University’s Dr. Kirsten Hedegaard, co-founder of the Eco-Voice Project, whose presentation on “Singing for a Sustainable Future” explored how the arts can support environmental education and action. Dr. Hedegaard led two Eco-Anthems sung by the NSCS and joined by the audience!
“The Great Lakes” was presented with full orchestra and featured soloists Michelle Areyzaga, soprano; Sadie Cheslak, alto; Oliver Camacho, tenor; and David Govertsen, bass.
